Having plants around your home is a great way to liven up your decor and invite a little bit of nature into your space.  But having plants can also be beneficial in a lot of other ways – for example, it has been proven that having plants in your home can purify and clear the air of toxins!  In this post, I’ll be sharing my favourite houseplants and their benefits to your home and your health.

Peace Lily

The Peace Lily is a beautiful plant for any home – green and leafy, but it also has the white flowers to make it even more pretty.  Peace Lilies are known to be great detoxifiers, and they have been proven to ward off chemicals such as benzene which is found in the home and is a known carcinogen.  The Peace Lily is very easy to look after, with just a small amount of water needed regularly.

Bromeliad

Another flowering houseplant, Bromeliads are green and leafy but also feature a vibrant red centre flower.  The Bromeliad is a great detoxifying plant, and, unlike other houseplants, release oxygen in the night, so they make a great plant to put in the bedroom.  Bromeliads are incredibly easy to look after, with just a little water regularly and a little sunlight.

Cacti and Succulents

Having cacti and succulents in your home has become a massive trend in the last few years, and if you want to prove your fashion credentials, you’ll definitely want to pick some up!  Not only do they look cool, but cacti and succulents are known for being probably the most easy plants to look after, needing barely any water and just sunlight.  Like other plants, they also have great purifying benefits.

Aloe Vera

Another newly trendy plant is Aloe Vera.  Part of the succulent family, it is very easy to look after (some water and sunlight) and it’s spiky leaves are interesting to look at.  With Aloe Vera, however, it is what is on the inside that counts.  Aloe Vera gel. found inside the leaves, has well known healing properties and can help soothe burns as well as help digestion, skin problems and many more ailments when ingested!

Areca Palm

Areca (or butterfly) Palms are houseplants that can be slightly larger than an average houseplant, but they are beautiful and impressive to look at, being incredibly exotic and tropical looking.  It is one of the best plants for purifying the air, releases a lot of moisture, and detoxifies the air from nasty pollutants such as acetone, which is found in substances like paint and nail varnish.  Very easy to look after, they are a wonderful addition to any home.

Draecana Marginata (Dragon Tree)

The Dragon Tree is another tropical looking plant that would spice up anyone’s home, and another one that is very easy to look after.  You can buy the plants in all different sizes to cater for wherever you want your plant to go; to add character to a desk or to liven up a bare corner of your house.  This plant has a very high oxygen content, so its purifying and detoxifying properties are second to none.

Ivy

Ivy is such a pretty plant to have in your home; its currently very trendy hang ivy from a ceiling or shelf in your home, which livens up shelves of books or ornaments.  Ivy can reduce pollutants and allergens in the home, and help to remove moulds and fungus.  So, Ivy is not only for those who want to keep up with the trends, but is also a NASA-proven air purifier!
