There are times in life where our emotions can become very overwhelming. Whether you find yourself getting irritable, anxious, sad, sometimes these feelings can escalate quickly to become full blown anxiety/panic attacks, an angry outburst or an emotional breakdown.

A lot of people have their own ways of dealing with these feelings, but most find it easier and more effective to have a person who they trust right next to them, as a reassurance that everything is okay. However, there are times where we are alone dealing with these feelings and we need to feel confident that we are able to soothe ourselves and feel okay on our own.

In this post, I’ll be sharing easy and effective way to soothe yourself in a time of high emotions and make sure that you feel better quickly.

Set A Calm Mood

When we feel like everything is getting on top of us, we sometimes say things like ‘I need to lie in a dark room’. This is actually a really great way of soothing ourselves – dim the lights in your bedroom, maybe invest in a Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp (it gives off a really soothing pink dim light), light some candles. Bright lights can cause sensory overload sometimes, so stripping that all back can have a really calming effect on our nervous system.

Make Yourself Comfortable and Cosy

Surrounding ourselves with soft, cosy and comforting things can instantly make us feel calm. You could invest in a weighted blanket, which has been shown to reduce anxiety and make us feel safe, or just use regular throws and blankets. Cocoon yourself in lots of soft, fluffy pillows and cushions and cuddle any soft toys you have. You could also find heated products useful, such as heated blankets or hot water bottles.

Listen To Soothing Things

Focusing on listening to something soothing can really help to calm us down and re-centre ourselves. Search for relaxing, chilled out playlists on Spotify or instrumental tracks such as piano. Alternatively, look for meditation music on YouTube, or a guided meditation that you can follow along to. You could also listen to binaural beats, which are known to calm down the nervous system. There are also lots of ASMR videos that can calm you, or you could just quietly play an episode of your favourite sitcom.

Breathe In Calm

Smells also have the ability to make us feel calm. I have talked a lot about my love for my essential oil diffuser, and one of the reasons I love it so much is that it lets me diffuse soothing oils such as lavender, that really calm me. If you don’t want to buy a diffuser, you can reap the benefits of essential oils by dabbing some onto a tissue, or using a pulse point roller. I also love burning scented candles when I feel I need comforting, but you could also burn items such as sage sticks or incense sticks.

Get Out A Notepad

Doing something creative can instantly distract us from whatever is making us feel stressed or irritated. Try some journalling – this can help us to gain more clarity on situations and help us feel better. For my 30 favourite journal prompts, click here. Alternatively, draw or doodle, even if you just scribble or make random patterns. Sometimes, we can’t express our feelings in words, so we can instead get it out like this. You could also try out a colouring book, and get creative by using lots of different colours.
