Everyone has days where they feel more down, anxious or frustrated than usual. However, for those who suffer from mental health issues already, these down days can make it extra hard for them to function and feel okay.

On these days, it can be hard to carry out any tasks, let alone take the time to take for yourself. But it’s more important than ever when you feel like this to take some easy but effective measures to make you feel more balanced and accomplished. In this post, I’m sharing the best ways to self care on these bad mental health days.

Try Not To Isolate Yourself

Even though on these kind of days we may not feel like socialising, it can be a good time to reach out to loved ones or friends. If actually going out to see anyone seems too daunting, a simple phone call or even a text can help you feel better.

Speak To A Professional

Speaking to a therapist or coach can be greatly beneficial to your mental health. If you feel strong enough, you could have a face-to-face conversation, or many therapists now operate Skype call and phone call appointments if you would rather stay in.

Watch An Episode Of Your Favourite Sitcom

Sitcoms and comedy films can have a great impact on our moods. They can have a happiness boosting, comforting effect and can make us feel safer. Pick your favourite episode, or one that you’re familiar with – one that you know will make you laugh.

Practice Some Good Hygiene

Hygiene can be the last thing on your mind if you’re having a bad mental health day, but practicing it just a little can often make a big difference to how you feel. Try brushing your teeth and hair, sitting in the bath or shower – even if you do just one of these things, you’ll feel accomplished.

Meditate

Sitting or lying quietly can be one of the easiest ways to self care on a down day. Get comfortable and find a short meditation to follow along to on YouTube and really focus on listening to the words and music – it will make you feel more relaxed and grounded by the end.

Reframe Your Thoughts

If there is something specific that has made you feel particularly anxious or down, try to see it from another perspective. What would an outsider looking in on the situation say? Is there any way of looking at it positively? Asking yourself some of these questions can help you gain some clarity.

I hope you found this post helpful, and if you’re having a down day, know that you will feel better soon!

Lots of love,

Natalie
